Autism assessments are highly specialized assessments that not only include an examination of autistic behaviours, they must also include an examination of life skills (adaptive functioning), executive functioning, cognitive factors, and mental health. In my assessments, I use the gold standard tools: the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-2nd Edition (ADOS-2) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview- Revised (ADI-R). I also include additional assessment tools to fully understand my clients such as the MIGDAS. I use a comprehensive approach that includes a review of history, report cards, past assessment reports, current behaviour and life experiences. I strive to contextualize autism in a person's life and include client strengths into my assessments.
For children, I include information from their parents, teachers, and other important family members and care takers. When working with adults, I also work with parents, spouses, siblings, and others as needed. As I am working to understand you better, I want to make sure I hear your life story and who you are as a human.
When assessing children under the age of 6, I require a copy of their pediatric consultation report and speech language pathology assessment before I can complete my assessment. In British Columbia, assessments by a speech language pathologist, pediatrician, and psychologist must be completed before the child is eligible for autism funding.
